An organized classroom makes for a happy teacher and happy students. Start small and your organizational skills will build over time.
10 tips teachers can use to stay organized in their classroom are…
- Label and Sort Supplies: Use clear bins with a label for all supplies. This helps in quickly locating what’s needed and also aids in easy cleanup. You can also use bins that are not clear to keep things looking clean and cohesive. I love to label everything so my students can help me keep the room organized and tidy!
2. Digital Document Management: Utilize digital tools for managing documents. Cloud storage services like Google Drive or Dropbox can be used to organize lesson plans, worksheets, and student submissions, making them easily accessible from anywhere and can be used and stored year after year.
3. Daily Planner Use: Keep a daily planner or a digital calendar for scheduling lessons, meetings, and deadlines. This helps in staying on top of various tasks and appointments.
4. Student Work Stations and Classroom Centers: Create designated areas in the classroom for different activities. For example, a reading corner, a group work area, and a solo study spot. This helps in managing classroom flow and keeping things organized.
5. Color Coding: Use color-coding for different subjects or class groups. This could be for folders, bins, or even sections on the whiteboard, helping to visually organize materials and information.
6. Regular Clean-up Routines: Set a regular schedule for cleaning and organizing the classroom. Involve students in this process to teach them organizational skills and keep the classroom tidy.
7. Bulletin Board for Important Information: Have a bulletin board or a designated space to post important information, schedules, and reminders for both students and yourself.
8. Utilize Wall Space: Maximize the use of wall space with bulletin boards, hanging organizers, shelves, or hooks. This can help in keeping the floor space clear and everything in its place. I also really love these magnetic hooks for the ceiling to hang table numbers from!
9. Additionally, you can assign classroom jobs to your students: Teaching your students to take part in keeping their classroom clean and organized is never a bad idea!
10. Personal Workspace Organization: Keep your desk or personal workspace organized. Have a system for managing paperwork, such as “to-do”, “in-progress”, and “completed” trays or folders.
