No Dr. Seuss and Owl Theme sneak peek!

If you are following my blog and Facebook page, you know that I just finished my Owl theme photo shoot yesterday.  You are also probably wondering about the Dr. Seuss theme!  Yes, I put that one in the schedule for yesterday as well.  I had it all ready to go!  The props were purchased, tags were made, fabulous ideas ready and then I received some bad news…

I happened to stumble across a blog post from another teacher blogger about some Dr. Seuss “issues.”  Apparently, there are lawsuits involving teachers creating Dr. Seuss lessons and clip art.  I also heard that you cannot even use the name “Dr. Seuss” in anything you create.  I was cautioned to stay away from doing anything involving Dr. Seuss.  I find it very sad since teachers are the one’s that really promote Dr. Seuss in the classroom.  My students are currently Dr. Seuss “crazy!”  We use their website and read their books and I dedicated the whole month of March to Dr. Seuss!  Needless to say, I had to abandon my Dr. Seuss theme.  Boo!

Now, more about the owl theme…

Although I was very sad that I couldn’t continue with this theme, this allowed me to focus all of my time on my Owl theme.  I promise you that you will not be disappointed with this one!

The owl theme was created since a large number of you asked for it.  I had visions of creating a cheerful and fun environment that both children and adults would love.  I intended to create a vignette using bright, happy colors of hot pink, green, orange, turquoise, and brown.

You don’t know this, but I always share my ideas with my mother before I finalize any of my designs. (Yes, I still get mommy’s approval!)  My mom has a great eye for design as well and I value her opinion.  So, I told her what I was doing and she didn’t like “my vision.”  Me, being somewhat of a design rebel, I did what I wanted anyways! Ha! Smile

To make a long story short, it is truly gorgeous and my mother admitted that I was RIGHT Smile  I absolutely LOVE the color combination and I think it is my personal favorite room!  I am so excited for you to see it and I know that you will love it too!

Here is a sneak peek of some of my designs!

YAY!!! I can’t wait to see it!! My mom purchased a cute metal owl at a craft show a few weeks ago and imagine my delight when she brought it to me and it’s brown, orange, hot pink and green!!!! I’m so super pumped for your owl theme and my new room that I have no words to express it!

  2. Grace says

Can’t wait to see your pictures and purchase this theme! My room in those colors and owls! Hope you have something I can use for my calendar. I haven’t found an owl one yet! Thanks

    • SchoolgirlStyle says

I need to start making calendar pieces! If I don’t get it up with my owl theme, email me back and remind me to do it! I am so swamped that I easily forget!

  3. Caroline says

Looks so wonderful. I love the colors. I had tons of colors at the beginning of the year but then saw your color combos that only had two or three and decided to only go with three. Now I do the black and white with yellow. Did your mom think it was going to be too much color? I thought it was good to stick with only a few.

    • SchoolgirlStyle says

My mom had more of an “earthy” vision. She thought the owls should be brown. I wanted them to be fun, colorful and vibrant!

  4. mary says

I love the color combination. I’m glad you saw your vision through to completion! Sometimes, whether right or wrong, pretty or not, you just have to go forward – as a “personal growth moment 🙂
(Those book characters are always copyrighted. Too bad!)

This is another fun design. Congrats!

    • SchoolgirlStyle says

I know you are thinking hard about this Debra! You are like me…you like everything! I can’t wait to see what you decide! I am sure you already know this, but when you are done, please send me more pics! 🙂

I am beyond excited for this owls theme! Here is my question… How long do you all keep up a theme? The year, a season, or a month?
Thanks! This preview was so good!

    • SchoolgirlStyle says

I keep mine up the entire school year. I really put so much time and effort into my theme that I make sure it stays the whole year. People think I am crazy because I change every year, but I get so excited to do something new! 🙂

I love all of you’r work. I am wondering why you alway have alot of girl colors and looks? The classroom should appeal to boys and girls..The owl theme for example needed to not have the pink. Alot of female teachers make the room to their liking and taste…We need to remember who the audience is…

    • SchoolgirlStyle says

Hi Rob! I probably pick out girl colors because I am a girl! 🙂 I have never had a boy complain about any of my color combinations – pink is a “learned” girl color and if we make a big deal out of it, then it becomes an issue (learned about that in my Early Childhood training). As for the Owl theme, I actually have 5 colors that I created in all of my tags – you can take out the pink. You can choose blue/turquoise, orange, green, and red. There isn’t a rule out there that says you need to use pink. Should I take out the blue because that might offend the girls? I create all of my themes with a variety of color combinations, so you can have the choice. If you look at my other themes…pirate (I would suspect that this would appeal to more boys than girls and didn’t use pink), black and white (didn’t use pink), bird (appeals to both boys and girls and didn’t use pink), Carnival (appeals to both boys and girls – didn’t use pink), and Rock Star (would appeal to both boys and girls – OOPS! Used pink! BUT, I also created a blue/turquoise version for boys). So, Rob…yes, I do remember who my audience is and I think that REAL men can live with pink! 🙂

      • Rob says

In looking back I realized my comment was harsh. I was really just wondering if you had any thing in the owl theme that included colors that did not include the pink or purple. It is hard to find classroom decorations that a male teacher can use and any help would be great..Again I am sorry for my bluntness and really do enjoy your creativity and amazing talent.

        • SchoolgirlStyle says

Awwww! Thanks, Rob! My cousin’s husband is a teacher and she keeps telling me that she wants me to do a room that is geared more for a male teacher. If you have any ideas, let me know and I will see what I can come up with! 🙂

          • PrincessRockstar says

The other teacher in my grade is a guy. His room is super sparse, but he’s managed to attempt a few themes. He started out with a sports them (cliche, I know). It was cool though, because he had a nerf basketball hoop he let kids shoot when they had a good day. Another year he tried a movie/Hollywood theme. They weren’t super girly, and he also didn’t do a whole lot to his room. Maybe that could give you a jumping off point. I think a sports theme would be fun to do if you could change it out with the seasons (and think of all the math tie in!) Football-Fall, Basketball- Winter, Baseball-Spring and Soccer for Fall and Spring.

          • Rob says

Wondering about doing a color or theme with mens ties as the inspiration..Things like paisley, plaids and stripes. I think you could even tie in a mate silver finish and maybe wood looking paper..

          • Molly says

I subbed in a first grade classroom where the teacher was male. He had his room decorated in a superhero theme.

  7. mary says

since you still have your bird theme, have you and your class been following the eagles in Iowa? Last year my first graders loved the experience, and this year the kids are equally as excited. We check in on them several times a day. “D14” just hatched Saturday morning so that makes 3 eaglets that are eating and growing and changing. Last year they dealt with snow and rain. This year the weather has been mild for them; I think that is why the eaglets are more ‘active’ – check it out.
    hugs –

    • SchoolgirlStyle says

No, I have never heard of this. I will go to this right now and check it out. Thanks, Mary!

I’m pretty sure, since you’re in Michigan and IM in Michigan, you’ll want to use my classroom as “model” classroom and decorate it for me. I mean, great adevertisemnt, right? LOL. I do have a HUGE classroom that if I had any skill, whatsoever, could be way cute.

  9. Tamera says

Can’t wait! I’ve always wanted a classroom theme throughout, but could NEVER find everything I wanted. Therefore, my room has been a mish-mosh of things. It would be wonderful to have everything coordinate for once.

  10. Ashlan says

LOVE the owl theme! The colors are designs are super cute. Makes me so sad about the Dr. Seuss problem. My classroom is decorated with a “Dr. Seuss” theme. I couldn’t wait to see what you had come up with. 🙁

  11. Sally says

Wow – I’m loving the Owl theme. I haven’t had a classroom theme before but these samples (and looking at your photos!) is convincing me! 🙂

  12. Kerry Brown says

I am using owls next year in my classroom. Where can I download these items?

  13. Colleen says

Just downloaded your owl cutout tags which are the cutest and exactly what I was looking for to welcome my kiddos, but was disappointed to see I can’t edit them to put their names on them like you did. Any suggestions on how to do that without writing by hand???

      • Colleen says

Thank you for making them editable, but I do not see them in my inbox. I might have accidentally deleted them if they went to my spam because I never look there before I delete! Any chance you can send again???

  14. Heather says

Hi, I was wondering how I can download any and all of your owl ideas. I absolutely love it!

  15. Dee says

I am so excited to see your OWL theme. I am using the theme for my class this year. I started working on my theme in April and was in a pretty good place when school ended in May. Another Kindergarten teacher decided to use the same theme during our summer break. So, because of that I needed to find something that wouldn’t mimic her color scheme. I am confident that your designs will help me stand out from my coworker. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING IT!! (now I can breathe a sigh of relief…)

  16. Katie says

I just saw this and love it. My theme this year is owls so I would love to download this. Can you let me know how I can do this?

  17. Rayanne Sims says

I am doing the owls this year. I would love the downloads to make locker and bulletin board owls. I would love to be able to add their names to the owls. I teach first grade and they like walking into a decorated classroom

  20. Stacia Seagroves says

I’m so sad to hear that about Dr. Seuss!! That is going to be my classroom theme and the lawsuits explain a lot about why it is so hard to find cute stuff for it!!!

  21. Leslie says

Love your site, as I was just browsing Pinterest for “owl” related themes for my classroom for next school year. Did I by chance miss where to purchase your packet from? I have not came across that information yet!

    • SchoolgirlStyle says
